Four soloists have been announced for the Leeds Castle Classical Concert this summer, which is also marking four decades this year.
To be held at the castle near Maidstone on Saturday, July 14, this year's event will have even more of a party atmosphere than previous years with a special finale featuring hits from the 70s, to mark the anniversary.
Conductor and artistic director John Rigby, who is conducting the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra this year as well as acting as compere and host, said: “This year marks a very significant milestone for the concert and every year the crowds are treated to a phenomenal concert and this year we believe will be one of the best – I can’t wait.”
“This is more than a concert - it is a spectacular signature event unique to Leeds Castle, with its diverse classical orchestral programme, interwoven with specially selected choral and solo pieces with the visual spectacle or field guns, superb fireworks and iconic aircraft displays.”
Soloists on the day will be West End performers Louise Dearman and Tim Howar, and making return visits, soprano Katie Bird, and tenor Alexander James Edwards.
John said: “I’m delighted to announce these four incredible soloists - a real mix of old friends and new - who are all at the top of their profession. They bring such quality and diversity that it allows for some very special and exciting programming."
Actress and singer Louise Dearman is best known for playing Glinda and Elphaba in Wicked in the West End and is also a regular guest on BBC Rado 2's Friday Night is Music Night. Currently working on her new album, to be released later this year, she has also released a book, Secrets of Stage Success, with Mark Evans.
Canadian actor and singer Tim Howar is currently the lead singer of Mike and the Mechanics. Known for having one of the most versatile voices in the business, it has earned the nickname Tim “The Power” Howar.
Bearsted-born soprano Katie Bird grew up with the classical concert on her doorstep. Last year she made her debut for English National Opera, and has recently made solo debuts with Scottish Opera, Northern Ireland Opera, Opera North, Neville Holt Opera and Longborough Festival Opera.
Alexander James Edwards began his career as a member of the Young Artists’ Programme at the Royal Opera House and last performed at Leeds in 2014, so is making a welcome comeback.
The line-up also includes a jaw-dropping display by the Aero Legends in a 1940s Spitfire.
Tickets are available until Monday, April 30 at £40 for picnic-style seats and £50 for reserved seating at the front of the stage.
