A stage comedy with a stellar cast, the revival of Yasmin Reza’s West End hit Art stars Nigel Havers, Denis Lawson and Stephen Tompkinson and comes to Kent this week.
A funny study of friendship, prejudice and tolerance, Art is one of the most successful plays ever. It opened in 1996 and took both the West End and Broadway by storm, winning awards on both sides of the Atlantic.
When Serge (Havers) spends a large amount of money on an all-white modernist painting, his close friends Marc (Lawson) and Yvan (Tompkinson) are baffled.
But do their reactions to the canvas actually mirror more dangerous antagonisms toward each other?
Nigel Havers is a well known face from TV, film and stage, and is best known for starring in Chariots Of Fire and Don’t Wait Up. Denis Lawson has appeared in everything from the original Star Wars trilogy to the long-running series New Tricks, as well as playing John Jarndyce in the BBC’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Bleak House.
Completing the trio is Stephen Tomkinson, who first came to prominence as Damien Day in the Channel 4 sitcom Drop The Dead Donkey, and has starred in TV series including Ballykissangel and DCI Banks, as well as the much-loved British film Brassed Off. The show’s dates at the Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury are the last for the UK tour.
