It’s time to take the plunge with this weekend’s Big Splash – and even try mermaiding sessions.
On Saturday, April 13, Medway’s four sports centres – Medway Park, Strood Sports Centre, Hoo Sports Centre and Splashes – will host a range of free water-based taster sessions for people of all ages and swimming abilities.
Residents will be able to try synchronised swimming, diving, water-polo, Fin2Fit mermaiding, lifeguarding and aqua fit.
There will also be pool parties, AquaTots and demonstrations on how to save a baby’s life.
Members of the Black Lion Swimming Club, MedwayTri, Medway Mermaids, Kent Water-Polo, Medway SubAqua, Skilltrack marine rescue skills and Medway WaterSports will also be joining in the fun and giving visitors the chance to take part in club-based activities.
New to the Big Splash this year is an indoor triathlon at Medway Park. Participants will compete in the pool, on a gym-based bike and run on a treadmill, with 15 minutes on each.
There will be an overall winner and everyone who takes part will get a medal. It costs £10 for members and £12 for non-members. To register email medwaysport@medway.gov.uk
There’s also a distance badge challenge by swimming as many lengths as you can for a Swim England distance certificate and badge - or try the mile challenge and swim 64 lengths. The cost is £3.50.
Howard Doe from Medway Council, said: “We have excellent sporting facilities in Medway and the Big Splash is a great way for families to find out more about what they have to offer including classes such as synchronised swimming, mermaiding and aqua fit.”
