A week-long folk festival with free pub gigs, shanty singing sessions and country dance classes is back this summer.
For the 59th year, Broadstairs Folk Week will be taking over the town’s indoor and outdoor venues with 90 artists set to perform.
This year, the line-up boasts music from the Canterbury-born band Oysterband, francophone folk group Le Vent du Nord and vocal five-piece Daphne’s Flight.
Jim Moray, Harmonia, Tim Edey, Morganway, Monster Ceilidh Band, Bird in the Belly and Windjammer are also just some of the names set to appear at the festival.
There will be outdoor performances on the bandstand at Victoria Gardens and a small stage on the sandy beach, while indoor venues such as the Broadstairs Sailing Club, Crampton Tower, Queen’s Road Baptist Centre and The Vale Church Hall will host music across the week.
Some of these events are ticketed; however, there will be lots of free gigs in Broadstairs’ pubs that anyone can turn up to, including Bradstow Mill, The George, Little Albion Inn, Royal Albion Hotel, Neptune’s Hall, Wortham Arms and The Crown.
There’s plenty of music, but if you fancy giving your eardrums a break then the festival is also full of other things for visitors to see and do.
On the Saturday, there will be a parade with dancers, characters and community groups starting from the war memorial on the High Street from 5.30pm.
The procession will continue onto the seafront where there will be a dance show on the bandstand.
There will also be a series of workshops, including crafts, singing, belly dancing, hula hooping, Tai Chi, percussion, harmonica and ukelele.
For those who feel like being part of the action, you can join in with country dances, ceilidhs, lindy hop routines and singarounds throughout the week.
You can also catch Morris dancers and visit the craft market and festival bar at Victoria Gardens.
You can find the full festival programme online here.
Broadstairs Folk Week takes place from Friday, August 9 to Friday, August 16.
