Tony Hancock was arguably one of Britain’s greatest comic actors but also a chronic depressive. He ended his life in 1968 with a mixture of pills and booze while on a tour of Australia.
However, there’s a chance to remember the good times at the Sarah Thorne Theatre, Broadstairs, this weekend when Iain Barton performs his tribute to the legendary comic.
Iain will relive some of the Galton and Simpson sketches made famous by Hancock.
The Kent resort is an appropriate setting for a Hancock tribute. The comedian famously had a long-lasting affair with Broadstairs-born Joan Le Mesurier, wife of Dad’s Army star John Le Mesurier. The couple had only been married six months when she fell for Hancock.
The beach at Broadstairs was the location for several of their liaisons. Joan Le Mesurier never left her husband but her affair with Hancock lasted until his death.
Tickets £10 in advance or £12 on the door. The Best of Tony Hancock starts at 7.30pm on Saturday, March 8. Call 0845 2626263.
