I’m always interested in seeing a new theatre show and this edge-of-your-seat thriller hit me like a train with its captivating mystery, intrigue and suspense.
From the moment I heard the first sound and saw the first movements on stage, I knew the Girl on the Train was going to be impressive.
The drama, which has been gripping audiences across the country since January, is currently on in Bromley until the weekend and, if you love a murder mystery, then you should grab yourself some tickets.
The new production, which is based on the best-selling novel by Paula Hawkins, stars actor, novelist and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher as Rachel Watson, a woman who spends her daily commute staring out of the train window and wishing for a different life.
When she notices that a woman she sees every day has gone missing, she takes it upon herself to become immersed in the story in a bid to solve the mystery.
Giovanna is the play’s leading lady until the end of this month, and she does put on a magnificent performance.
Her ability to make Rachel's struggles feel authentic was fantastic and I was immersed in the ups and downs of her efforts to prove she was not going mad or had committed a murder.
Despite it being mostly tense and gripping, there were some comedic moments and Giovanna’s warmth and wit shone through.
The minimal set, the startling moments, the lighting, the bangs, the train motions and, of course, the superb actors on stage must take credit for making the play as nail-biting, frightening and exciting as it is.
You will have to go see the show to find out how the mystery ends if you’ve not read the book or seen the film, as there will be no spoilers here.
After Giovanna finishes the role at the end of the month in Cheltenham, EastEnders actor Louisa Lytton and TV presenter Laura Whitmore will take over the role of Rachel later this year.
Giovanna, who was crowned Queen of the Jungle in 2020’s I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, has previously performed in plays such as 2:22 A Ghost Story, Alan Menken's A Christmas Carol and The Christmasaurus alongside her husband, McFly singer Tom Fletcher.
She is also known for her podcast, Happy Mum Happy Baby, which has featured guests such as Kate Middleton, Lorraine Kelly and Davina McCall.
The show is based on the 2015 novel, which was adapted into a feature film starring Emily Blunt and Justin Theroux in 2016 and the movie was nominated for a BAFTA and won the People's Choice Award for Favourite Thriller Movie.
The Girl on the Train will be at the Churchill Theatre, which is a fantastic venue in Bromley, until Saturday, March 22. You can book tickets here.
