Folk-punk singer-songwriter Frank Turner is the latest big-name act to perform at a Kent venue’s 20th anniversary celebrations.
It seemed a fitting way for organisers to mark Tunbridge Wells Forum’s two decades as a gloriously sweaty live music gold mine with a man whose path to success came almost entirely from performing on the road.
With the show announced as a new year treat for long-time fans of the Forum, Frank Turner’s journey to stardom has been built on playing sites like this 250-capacity former public toilets.
His solo career began in 2005 after his band Million Dead split up, and after three years of hard touring, it was a mass singalong at Reading Festival in 2008 which finally kick-started his career.
A veteran of four solo albums, two compilation albums and four EPs, his heartfelt songs like Wessex Boy and I Still Believe garnered him enough of a fanbase to sell out Wembley Arena last year and play at the pre-show for the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony.
See him in more intimate surroundings on Thursday, January 10. Tickets £16. Visitwww.twforum.co.uk
Also this week, hotly-tipped indie four-piece Palma Violets return to the venue they visited in October. Catch them on Wednesday, January 9. Tickets £10.
Other names set to perform for the anniversary include Funeral for a Friend (Saturday, January 19), Dodgy (Friday, January 25) and Foals (Monday, January 7).
