Get away from the hustle and bustle of Christmas, with a winter walk in the Garden of England.
We've picked some perfect places to head for:
It may have celebrated its 900th anniversary this year, but Leeds Castle is still moving with the time.
This winter throw on your hats and scarves, pull on your wellies... and grab your phone and walk off the Christmas pudding with the castle’s new Winter Trail App.
From Saturday, December 21 until Sunday, January 5, families and friends can visit the estate and take part in a fun trail on the new app, across the woodland walk, Castle Island and formal gardens.
Viitors can collect clues along the way and answer questions around the grounds themed to bird, with all correct entries entered into a prize draw to win a bird of prey experience for the family.
The Winter Trail App is free to download with a Leeds Castle admission ticket, themed alongside the castle's Christmas decorations of Magical Birds and Festive Feathers, which runs until New Year's Day - don’t forget to count how many robins there are if you venture inside the castle.
Once you have completed the trail, explore the falconry centre and get lost in the yew-tree maze and grotto, and experience how the estate looks covered in a blanket of frost and mist rising from the castle’s moat, before settling down in the oak-beamed Castle View Restaurant which will be serving winter warmers.
Admission tickets to Leeds Castle give unlimited access for a year. Book at leeds-castle.com
Historic Hever Castle will be open daily from Friday, December 27 to New Year’s Day, from 10.30am to 4.30pm, for those wanting some fresh air in splendid surroundings.
During Winter Walks visitors only have to pay for garden entry and then get castle entry free, making it a great value day out for all the family. Take a stroll in the gardens where the warm red bark of the Redwood trees glows against the winter sky and winter berries glisten in the frost.
Hever’s yew topiary looks impressive with a covering of snow or frost and the hellebores look majestic in the winter sun.
The Winter Garden will be in full bloom with scents of Daphne and Viburnum filling the air while the fiery reds, oranges and yellows of brightly coloured Dogwood stems lift the spirits.
Energetic visitors can bring their wellies and take a walk around the lake, looking out for wildlife and waterfowl while in the castle, there will be welcoming log fires and a last look at this year’s Christmas decorations. Find out more at hevercastle.co.uk/whats-on
