Dover Castle’s Second World War Weekend will be back with a bang over this three-day holiday.
An explosive battle will be played out for visitors’ entertainment, and there will be no last detail spared as the castle returns to the 1940s.
Crowds will have the chance to walk through military encampments and get up close to a full-size replica Spitfire. Tea will be served from a genuine Navy, Army and Air Force Institute (NAAFI) wagon, one of only five left in existence today.
The original mobile canteen is fully operational and, though it is often in-demand on film sets, on this occasion owner Joanne Povey, from Sheppey, will be fulfilling its original purpose and serving refreshments.
Other attractions include the opportunity to step inside Mr Smith’s bombed-out shop and discover the austerity of the war years from the Ministry of Food. Also experience the German field hospital, get tips on the latest period fashion, and witness the firepower display.
With live music from the ’40s and plenty of hands-on activities for children, organisers English Heritage promise a day to remember for all ages.
The Second World War Weekend at Dover Castle runs from Saturday, May 24, to Bank Holiday Monday, from 10am to 5pm each day. Tickets for non-members of English Heritage cost £18.50 for adults, £11.10 for children and £48.10 for a family ticket. Call 01304 211067 or visit www.english-heritage.co.uk
