Hammer attack suspect arrested after 'assault' at Whitstable Co-op

A suspected thief has been arrested after reportedly assaulting a supermarket employee with a hammer.
Police were called to Co-op in Canterbury Road, Whitstable, at about 10.15pm yesterday.
It was reported that cash had been stolen from a till in the shop.
When the suspect was challenged, he allegedly assaulted a member of staff with a hammer.
The shop worker suffered bruising to his back.

A 35-year-old man of no fixed address was arrested in connection with the incident.
He remains in police custody, while enquiries are ongoing.
