A specialist bomb unit was called to Whitstable this morning to detonate... a lump of concrete on the beach.

The team were called to West Beach after a member of the public found what they thought to be an unexploded Second World War device yesterday afternoon.

Crews from the Ministry of Defence explosive ordnance disposal could only get to the device today due to tide levels, but on inspection, the suspicious item was found to be just a concrete mooring in the sand.

No action was taken and two coastguard vehicles were also called.

A coastguard spokesman said: "There was something suspicious on the beach, thought an unexploded device.

"Bomb disposal attended and it was not ammunition, there was no further action.

"We were called yesterday but because of tides it was only possible to get there today.

"It was found to be a lump of concrete."

A police spokesman confirmed the object was a concrete mooring.

Spokesman Andy Saunders said: "A member of public reported a suspicious device in the sand at around 1.20pm on 11 May, which they believed to be an old wartime UXB (unexploded bomb).

"The object was submerged by water before it could be inspected by an MOD explosive ordnance disposal team.

"The EOD team visited the site again this morning and declared the object was actually a concrete mooring and not a unexploded bomb."
