Canterbury City Council launches parking consultation in Whitstable after Gorrell Tank closure

The council launched a consultation yesterday to allow parking at Westmeads recreation ground to offset a lack of spaces caused by the Gorrell Tank closure.

Bosses believe the land off Cromwell Road is best option to help residents and businesses while the town's biggest pay and display is out of action.

Southern Water announced last week they hope to reopen half the Gorrell Tank by the end of July with repair work starting next Monday.

The three-week consultation was needed for residents to have their say on changes to an Off Street Parking Place Order. It closes on Monday, June 30.

The football pitch and play area will not be used as part of any temporary car park.

The council says it will use a protective cover to limit grass damage and are in talks with charities to operate it.

They say the area is the right option because it provides a large number of spaces and signposting is easier.

The council's website reads: "We are aware that this could be temporarily inconvenient to residents living nearby, but this is an emergency situation and we hope they can accept it for a temporary period for the greater good of the town."

To respond fill out a consultation form on the council's website or write to Transportation Manager, Council Offices, Military Road, Canterbury, CT1 1YW.
