A bid to expand a McDonald's drive-thru will prevent queues from backing out onto a major road, Kent highways bosses believe.

The fast food chain has submitted plans to revamp takeaway services at its Chestfield branch, outside Whitstable, off the Thanet Way.

It wants to extend the back of house area at the busy restaurant and install two new customer order displays for motorists.

The revamp, which will result in the loss of four parking spaces, will see the drive-thru lanes expanded.

It will allow the two lanes to cater for more vehicles at a time.

Kent County Council Highways officer Fiona Wiles is backing the proposals, which have been submitted to Canterbury council's planning department.

"I am aware of the traffic queues at this location that can often build up and out onto the Thanet Way," she said.

"These proposals will increase the capacity for the drive-thru lanes. I am satisfied that the reduction in parking spaces will have not have a negative impact at this location."

Back in 2017, the Chestfield branch was the first in east Kent to get a digital makeover, with touchscreens being introduced for walk-in customers.

Just last week, a bid to open a third McDonald's restaurant and drive-thru in Folkestone was rejected.

Meanwhile, a plan to launch a fourth site in Ashford are currently ongoing.
