A person has been hit by a train between Whitstable and Margate.

Emergency services and Network Rail response staff were called to the tracks shortly after 10pm yesterday.

Police have now confirmed the victim - a man in his 60s - died at the scene in Herne Bay.

The incident happened near Whitstable train station

The line was blocked and Southeastern trains from Faversham to Ramsgate and Margate were diverted via Dover.

A limited replacement bus service was also put on, although not enough vehicles arrived to transport all the passengers.

Meanwhile, those on board the affected train were stranded just outside Whitstable for nearly three hours before a rescue service was able to pull up alongside it and collect them.

They were then taken back to Faversham railway station, shortly before 1am.

The service was back to normal this morning.
