Hammer-attack suspect appears in court over Whitstable and Chatham raids

A 35-year-old man is to appear in court, charged with robberies in Whitstable and Chatham.

On Wednesday evening, police were called to a Co-op in Canterbury Road, Whitstable, following reports that cash had been stolen and a staff member had been attacked with a hammer.

Charlie Elliott, of no fixed address, has been charged with robbery and possession of an offensive weapon – namely a claw hammer.

Elliott was also charged with aggravated burglary at a shop in Watling Street, Chatham, on April 15. He also faces charges of robbery and possession of an offensive weapon relating to a raid at a shop in Churchill Avenue, Chatham, on Tuesday.

He appeared by virtual link at Medway Magistrates' Court this morning, and was remanded in custody.

The case will next be heard at Maidstone Crown Court on May 25.
