Mindless vandals have smashed windows at a community hub and a supermarket in Whitstable.

Staff at The Horsebridge Arts Centre have accused would-be burglars of attempting to raid the charity's building just two days after it was forced to close amid the fight against coronavirus.

A post on its Facebook page says: "Absolutely stunned that we haven’t been shut to the public for 48 hours and today someone has smashed a window and tried to force their way in.

"Our brilliant team have responded and we are boarded up, but all are very shocked this would happen.

"Really concerning for the safety of staff in the building going forward."

Staff at the centre have asked people to "spread the word" there is no food, drink or money on the premises.

The team is also appealing for witnesses to come forward.

The post added: "As a charity we have really tough months ahead of us and this is exactly the opposite of where we need to be focusing our attention and finances."

Supermarket chain Iceland, in the town's high street, also had a window smashed.

The store opened its doors last week to elderly shoppers struggling to pick up essential as panic buyers strip shelves bare across Kent.

Police are investigating an attempted burglary at a commercial premises in Horsebridge Road, Whitstable, between 4pm on Saturday and 7pm the following day.

A window was damaged but no access to the building was gained.

Officers are also investigating a report of criminal damage caused to a shop window in Whitstable High Street which is believed to have taken place between 2pm on and 6.45am the following day.
