A warning system is to be installed on a notorious rail crossing where four people have died since 2010.

Bosses at Network Rail have said the foot crossing, in Glebe Way, Whitstable, will become one of the first in the country to benefit from the new audible technology once it is installed.

The announcement comes after the firm pledged to work with the community about closing the crossing after the tragic death of schoolgirl Sacha Wheeler in February.

It is not yet known when the warning system will be installed but Network Rail officials are holding a public information event on Monday, October 26 to discuss the crossing's future.

The drop-in session will take place at Whitstable Town Football Club in Belmont Road from 2pm to 8pm.

Network Rail spokesman Chris Denham said the firm is exploring a number of options regarding the crossing's future.

He said: "The constraints of the site mean that this will not be a simple exercise and we are currently exploring a number of options to replace the crossing.

"The safety of passengers and the wider public is our highest priority, which is why we regularly review the safety measures we have in place at each of our level crossings and will always consider options for how they can be improved."

Network Rail is investing £100 million into its programme to improve level crossing safety across the country up until 2019.
