A memorial service was held in Whitstable today to remember the lives of nearly 200 soliders who were killed during the First World War.

The Whitstable branch of the Royal British Legion organised the ceremony at the town's memorial in Library Square at 11am.

It took place on the day when Britain declared war on Germany 100 years ago.

Scores of residents attended to pay their respects with thousands of similar services held across the country.

Resident Janet Newcombe read out the 176 names of Whitstable men listed on the town's memorial while other soldiers not listed were also remembered.

Veterans from the Royal Naval Association and Royal Air Force Association laid wreaths at the foot of the memorial after the service.

Janet said: "It was an honour to read the names out and incredibly moving."
