A mum behind bars for abusing her baby boy took part in raids on a petrol station and a village post office after he was taken into foster care, it has emerged.
Jody Simpson, 24, was jailed for 10 years in February after a jury found her guilty of causing or allowing serious physical harm to her son Tony, who was just 41 days old when he was left fighting for his life.
His injuries, including numerous fractures, were so severe that they caused septicaemia, forcing doctors to later amputate both of his legs.
Simpson and the boy's father, Tony Smith, of Sydney Road, Whitstable, were jailed after the jury found that one of them had deliberately harmed their son in a squalid flat at Sunningdale Court in Square Hill Road, Maidstone.
Jurors were in tears on hearing a victim statement and seeing two photos of the boy, now aged three, as he is today.
They later broke into spontaneous applause after the judge praised Tony’s adoptive parents as "absolute stars".
Simpson returned to Maidstone Crown Court on Monday, where it was revealed that after Tony was discharged from hospital and sent to live with foster parents in 2015, she took part in two raids on businesses in Whitstable and Herne Bay.
The first, on December 3, 2016, took place at the Shell Chestfield service station.
Simpson broke in and stole boxes of cigarettes and bottles of alcohol worth a total of about £5,000.
Two days later she attempted to break into Herne Village Stores, on the outskirts of Herne Bay, at 2am. Police were alerted and nothing was stolen.
Simpson was jailed for three months for burglary and two months for the attempted burglary. She was given a further seven days for failing to surrender to bail.
All the sentences will run alongside her 10-year term for child cruelty, so she will not serve any extra days behind bars.
