Pilgrims Hospices new charity shop in Tankerton near Whitstable claims to be ‘first of its kind’ in the country

A new and unique charity shop is set to open its doors and claims to be the first of its kind in the country.

That is because every item of clothing being sold at the new Pilgrims Hospice store will be new and unworn, complete with retailers’ original tags.

The shop, which launches today, is the 31st outlet for Pilgrims Hospices and is set to stock items from brands such as M&S, Next, New Look, Karen Millen, French Connection and many other high street favourites.

Bosses hope it will be a haven for bargain-hungry shoppers as all the items, which are still offered to the charity as donations, will be sold at a fraction of their retail price.

The new store is at 106 Tankerton Road in Tankerton, near Whitstable, which was formerly a diabetes charity shop.

Manager Karen Hill says it is a new concept in the charity sector and will largely stock women’s clothing.

“It brings incredible value to our customers while supporting the vital work of Pilgrims Hospices,” she said.

“Whether you’re looking for a show-stopping party outfit, a thoughtful gift, or a wardrobe refresh, the new shop has something for everyone.

“We hope it will be more than just a shopping destination, but a haven for fashion lovers who value quality, sustainability and a good bargain.

“This sustainable shopping model is also perfect for eco-conscious shoppers who want to reduce textile waste while still indulging in retail therapy.”

The idea for the shop came about because among the thousands of items of clothing donated every year are brand new ones.

In the past, the charity held one-off sales of the unworn clothing but the charity’s retail bosses saw an opportunity to open a shop solely dedicated to new stock, which they claim is the first of its kind in the country.

The Pilgrims Hospices shops provide vital revenue for the charity.

Last year its retail arm raised £5.7 million, all of which went directly towards providing vital end-of-life care for patients.

The charity says it is welcoming new donations.
