A television series set in a Kent town has been nominated for favourite on-demand show – alongside Clarkson's Farm, Bridgerton and The Crown.

Whitstable Pearl is based on Julie Wassmer's popular murder mystery novels and features Kerry Godliman, star of Ricky Gervais' After Life, in the lead role of Pearl Nolan.

The series, which is mostly set in Whitstable, has been nominated at this year’s TV Times Awards in the favourite on-demand show category.

It is up against Bridgerton (Netflix), Clarkson's Farm (Amazon Prime), Loki (Disney+), RuPaul’s Drag Race UK (BBC3 Online) and The Crown (Netflix).

Ms Wassmer said: "Everyone involved in the series is thrilled with the nomination, including all the local people who not only watched it but provided talent and services for it during a very difficult period filled with Covid restrictions.

"We are up against fierce competition from other wonderful dramas such as Bridgerton and The Crown so are very grateful for any votes viewers may give us until the deadline of October 15."

The first episode of the series follows the plot of the author’s debut whodunit, The Whitstable Pearl Mystery – as does the fourth episode, Disappearance At Oare, which is the fifth book.

But the other four episodes are original scripts with Julie acting as executive producer and consultant.

The series premiered on streaming channel Acorn TV and follows Pearl, a restaurant owner who, having trained as a police officer earlier in her career, decides to set up a local detective agency.

In her first case she discovers the body of a close friend and forms an unlikely partnership with new police chief, DCI Mike McGuire.

Whitstable Pearl was adapted by Norwegian filmmaker Øystein Karlsen, who was said to have given the crime drama a "Scandi" edge.

A number of locations in Kent appear in the series.
