An 82-year-old was taken to hospital with head injuries after she was knocked down by cyclists in Honey Hill.

Claire Natall, 44, and her partner Kerri Hughes, 42, were on the way to walk their dogs in Whitstable when they witnessed the “shocking” incident.

Now, they are hoping to track down the elderly woman - named Elaine - to make sure she is OK.

Claire said she was driving behind a group of 10 cyclists on road bikes. When she approached Meadow Grange Nursery she spotted two elderly ladies halfway across the road.

She said: “The bikes tried to get between the old women and the pavement. I said, ‘there’s going to be an accident’.”

Claire said one of the bikes went on its side and spun out, taking out about five or six other cyclists. The 82-year-old was hit “by about four bikes” and “had blood coming out of her head”. One of the cyclists was holding their collarbone.

Claire said:“I pulled over and my partner jumped out and took her fleece off, and we held it to her head.

“She was losing consciousness - she was properly in shock. She was complaining of pain down her back and side.”

Claire added: “They were three or four-abreast and it isn’t a straight road.

Two people from Meadow Grange came over straight away and brought out a wheelchair so we could move the lady out of the road - they were fantastic.”

Kerri added: “The lady’s named Elaine, and she lives in Hillborough in Herne Bay. She’d only gone to Meadow Grange to buy some eggs.

“She had tyre marks over her trousers after it happened. They were really shaken up.”

Three ambulance vehicles were called to the scene, and the elderly pedestrian was taken to William Harvey Hospital, along with two male cyclists. Police also attended, but no criminal offences have been identified.

The cyclists were from the Kent Cycling Club - based at the University of Kent - and have sent their regards to the injured woman, adding that they are co-operating with the police investigation.

Claire said: “We just want to make sure she’s OK, and maybe buy her some more eggs.”
