Train services were disrupted after a lorry reportedly crashed into a railway bridge and drove off.

All lines between Faversham and Ramsgate were blocked after the accident in Graveney shortly before 4pm, with trains either delayed, cancelled or revised.

A spokesman for Network Rail told KentOnline shortly after: "At 3.54pm we were called by a member of the public who advised us that a lorry struck Blue Anchor bridge in Graveney, near Seasalter, let its tyres down and then drove off.

"The construction of the girder bridge is such that it if a lorry really struck it, then it could knock the rails out of alignment.

"So we closed the railway because it wasn't safe to run trains.

"Our mobile operator is on the track at the moment to inspect it and we hope to hear form him soon"

"Replacement buses are being arranged to accommodate affected passengers and should be arriving in the next few minutes."

By 5.10pm the bridge had been inspected and deemed safe, with all lines reopened.
