A group of travellers have been given the shove after the council received more than 20 complaints.

Canterbury City Council took action after they parked up in Swalecliffe car park on Friday and issued them with a legal notice to leave within 24 hours.

But on the Sunday, the campervans and caravans had only moved down the road to a grass verge by Chestfield roundabout, prompting more than 20 complaints from members of the public and the parish council.

City council officials and police officers attended and served another notice requiring them to leave by the end of the day, which they did by 3.30pm.

Chairman of the council’s community committee, Cllr Neil Baker said: “We reacted quickly to the concerns of the public to ensure these issues were nipped in the bud as soon as possible, and have since had a number of calls thanking us for dealing with the situation so promptly.”
