Residents are warned to stay vigilant after a man claiming to be a policeman tricked his way into two Whitstable homes.

The man knocked on the doors of two properties - one in Swalecliffe Road and another in Westgate Terrace - on Tuesday.

He claimed to be investigating a fraud, and entered the homes asking for details of any recent work carried out on the properties - adding that another officer would be calling shortly.

In both incidents, it is not believed anything was taken.

Detective Constable Robert Goodban said: “Thankfully the victims did not give out any personal details and reported the incidents.

"A police force will never ask a member of the public for their bank details, or money. If you are not confident that a person claiming to be an officer is genuine, ask to take their details.

"Contact 101, or 999 in an emergency. A call handler will be able to verify whether your caller was genuine. Never hand over any money, or other items, to a courier after receiving this type of call.”
