A householder has narrowly escaped falling victim to burglary, after he reportedly found a man rifling through drawers at his Whitstable home.
The suspected imposter- claiming to be from Trading Standards - called at the Burnan Road property at about 1pm yesterday, and asked to step inside to check on double glazing.
Once indoors, he distracted a man living at the house by asking for a drink of water.
Detective Sergeant Brian Doughty said: "Fortunately the victim sensed something was amiss and returned to find the suspect reportedly searching through drawers.
"Upon being challenged by the victim, the suspect left immediately in the direction of Swalecliffe.
"Remember - if someone comes to your door, whether or not you were expecting them, do not be afraid to ask them for identification and check they are genuine first before letting them inside your home.
"If in doubt, ask them to leave and come back when a family member or friend can be with you."
The suspect was described as being white, 5ft 10in tall with short black hair and smartly dressed.
Police are currently making enquiries, and ask that anyone with information contacts 01843 222289 quoting 11-0522.
