Whitstable Town joint-manager Danny Ward is hoping for a change of fortune when his side play Guernsey at Belmont on Saturday.

The Oystermen lost 3-0 at now Ryman League, Division 1 South leaders Merstham last week – a game in which Ward’s side hit the woodwork four times.

The home keeper also produced what Ward described as “stunning” saves to keep Town at bay.

Ward said: “It was one of those frustrating games. Nothing would go in for us no matter how hard we tried.

“I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing – to hit the woodwork as much as we did was
unbelievable.

“And so were those saves by the keeper. I honestly thought we had scored before he somehow saved them – I just knew it was going to be one of those days. I hope we don’t see a repeat performance this week.”

The loss at Merstham left Ward’s side 11th, eight places and seven points above Saturday’s opponents. But Ward has been involved in the game long enough to know you can take nothing for granted.

Town drew 2-2 with Guernsey in the third game of the season and Ward said: “That was a game we should have won. We were 2-0 up with 15 minutes to play. You should win from that position but we didn’t and that always hurts.

“Now we’ve got the chance to make amends and ensure we get all the points this time.”
