Whitstable boss Scott Porter says Saturday’s wooden-spoon clash at Peacehaven & Telscombe is the biggest of their season as they bid to beat the drop.
Rock-bottom Town have been mathematically relegated from Ryman League, Division 1 South after winning just six of their 44 games and Saturday’s 3-1 reverse at East Grinstead meant the best they can finish is second-bottom.
The Oystermen visit East Sussex to face the team immediately above them on Saturday, seeking to close a four-point gap ahead of the final game of the season in the hope that only one team might be relegated due to an off-season reshuffle.
Porter said: “After Saturday we can’t get third from bottom so we have to look at the next challenge which is beating Peacehaven and try to get off the bottom.
“We have still got a lot to play for, which not every team has at this stage of the season.
“It might seem weird to say it as we have been officially relegated but we are still playing for something.”
He added: “If we can finish second bottom then it gives us more chance of a reprieve if there is to be one. We have got people looking into it and I hear things about Greenwich Borough going into Division 1 North not South which gives us hope and we’re waiting to see what happens with Farnborough.
“We just have to wait and see but in the meantime do whatever we can to get off the bottom and help our cause.
“The circumstances might be miserable and not what we’d choose but it’s a massive game, certainly the biggest since I have been here. We are not lacking motivation.”
