A talented teenager is celebrating after she enjoyed double success on the world stage.
Aylesham’s Ruby Monger, from S2 Martial Arts Academy in Whitstable, won at the World Association of Kickboxing Organisations (WAKO) Junior World Championships in Jesolo, Italy.
The 16-year-old beat German opponent Maria Souliew in the -56kg final on Friday, October 7 - before also being crowned the best female ring fighter at the event.
“She was over the moon really,” said dad Fraser.
“She couldn’t believe it. When she won, she was, obviously, on cloud nine.
“She thought she had achieved everything but getting that [best female ring fighter] as well was something else!”
Monger becomes just Team GB’s second female junior world champion. The other, Wales’ Tennessee Randall, is now a senior world champion.
For Monger, who won the English World Ring Sport Association title earlier this year, it was a new experience.
But her dad said: “It was quite new to her. It was quite a strict camp, really.
“After breakfast, you went straight to the venue and you had to be at the venue all day, and Ruby had to train every day she wasn’t competing. She had to make weight every day as well.
“Then it was back to the hotel in the evening for a team meeting. Everyone had to be in bed by 10pm.
“But she soon adapted.
“When she was training, the others were quite impressed by her and she had a good crowd watching her compete.
“Lots of people at her school were watching it online - the head teacher and PE teachers - so it was good to know that everyone back at home was supporting her.”
Her success in 2022 has helped to inspire others at the club, based on Joseph Wilson Industrial Estate.
“At her club, she has inspired loads,” said Fraser.
“They all want to get their heads down, compete and just do a bit more, really.
“She’s definitely been an inspiration to everyone at the club.”
And there could be even more success to come before the year is out for Ruby, who is nicknamed “Tiny Tank”.
Fraser explained: “In November, she has got a British title fight for the WRSA - the same one she won for England, she’s now going for the British title.
“Then next year, she will look to be a junior at the WAKO Europeans, which will be in Turkey.”
Ruby certainly has put in the work, training hard at the S2 Martial Arts Academy, however the Simon Langton Girls’ Grammar School pupil hasn’t let her studies slip.
Her dad said: “She’s just into her A-Levels now.
“Trying to keep up her grades, as well as training full-time, has been quite hard for her, but she has adapted well.”
