Five teenagers have been arrested after extra police were scrambled to tackle a rise in anti-social behaviour in a trouble-hit park.

Four boys and a girl, all aged between 14 and 16, were apprehended on suspicion of robbery on March 27 (Wednesday).

It reports of teenagers attempting to steal from other teens in the Dane John Gardens and city wall areas on multiple days earlier in the week.

They have since been bailed pending further enquiries and investigations are ongoing.

Police were forced to bring in a dispersal order following the recent rise in attempted crime in the area – which has gathered a negative reputation for its tendency to facilitate crime.

The 48-hour measure in the city centre is set to last until Friday March 29 at 3pm – with extra patrols having additional powers to disperse anti-social groups and arrest those who fail to comply.

So far, three people have been stopped and searched in Canterbury – with two community resolutions completed for possession of cannabis.

Extra patrols will continue to be carried out in the area, with officers engaging with the public to ensure they feel safe and report anti-social behaviour.

Inspector Paul Stoner of Canterbury’s Community Safety Unit said: “We don't want to stop anyone enjoying our wonderful city.

“However, when offences are reported it is right that we take robust action against those involved and make sure the public, particularly children on their way to and from school, feel safe.”
