Owner of The Lane in Deal dishes out brilliant comeback to customer's comment

A cafe owner has been inundated with praise for her witty retort to a customer who implied waiting staff are unintelligent.

Anna Vidler, who runs The Lane in Deal, pulled no punches when a rude guest told staff how glad they were to see their child go to university as he “wants them to be intelligent and not end up serving tables”.

The throwaway comment on Sunday prompted a fantastic reply from Mrs Vidler on social media, who took the opportunity to educate the world on what it takes to make it in the hospitality sector.

The business owner of 10 years said: “Every single one of our staff members have absolutely bossed it these last few weeks.

“The hours everyone has put in is insane, the graft, the loyalty to us, they show up to make sure every single person who comes in here has a great experience.

“Our ethos is to create a memory for everyone.

“Hospitality, if you're in it, is truly special, never underestimate this industry, it's a tough game and Christmas time is ruthless (and yes, we don't always get it right!).

“But we do it because we want to serve, we want you to feel relaxed enough so you can have time out of your busy lives and share togetherness with your loved ones.

“So thank you to the person who made this comment today, it's given me a moment to shout out to this very tough industry!

“Just imagine a world without us.”

The response has been liked almost 2,000 times on Facebook while more than a hundred people offered comments of support.

Angie McManus wrote: “Well said. I have a son who has worked in hospitality for years and two daughters at university. I am equally as proud of all of them.

Billy McGarry added: “You may be in hospitality but you’re business owners, entrepreneurs with ideas you brought to your business.

“You help run the backbone of the economy in the hospitality industry.”

“I can’t believe somebody would say that. Dreadful comment to make. We love coming to The Lane and you and your staff are always excellent,” said Ben Young.

The hugely popular Deal cafe first opened in May 2014 under the watchful eye of Anna and her now-husband Chris.

The pair have never been afraid to speak their minds for a good cause, having previously spoken passionately about the cost-of-living and energy prices hike two years ago.
