Small boat search and rescue operation in English Channel between Dover and Deal

A search and rescue mission took place following an incident involving small boats in the English Channel between Dover and Deal.

Coastguard helicopters from Lydd and Lee on Solent and an RNLI lifeboat were involved in the operation this afternoon.

In a statement during the search, a coastguard spokesman said: "HM Coastguard has been coordinating a search and rescue response to an incident involving small boats off Kent, working with the Navy, Border Force and other partners.

"HM Coastguard will continue to safeguard life around the seas and coastal areas of the UK, working with search and rescue resources in the area.

"If a vessel needs search and rescue assistance, HM Coastguard will continue to respond to all those in need."

The exact nature of the search and rescue operation has not been revealed, although it is believed to have wound down later in the afternoon.

No further details have yet been released about the incident.
