A 140-metre stretch of road will close for two weeks later this month, bringing a 25-mile diversion, temporary traffic lights and overnight closures.

The A2 Canterbury Road in Faversham will be disrupted for electrical connection works to be carried out at the new Redrow Preston Fields housing estate.

However, the works will bring an official diversion of about 25 miles, with a journey time of at least 45 minutes.

Between October 21 and October 24, overnight road closures between 9pm and 5am will force motorists off the carriageway.

Motorway traffic will be encouraged to use the M2 junction 6, Brenley Corner and a small portion of the A251 Faversham Road.

Although most traffic will be able to use the shorter route, Kent County Council (KCC) has offered its official route non-motorway traffic.

The alternative route would see traffic guided towards Harbledown before moving through the A28 in Wincheap and Chilham before joining the A251 Faversham Road at the Challock roundabout or vice versa, a journey lasting 45 minutes.

For the second half of the works, from October 25 to November 3 temporary traffic lights will be used 24/7.

KCC say these works have been scheduled to take place during the school holidays and the authority has requested manual control of the temp traffic lights between 7am to 7pm each day to minimise disruption.

It also admitted local traffic is likely to choose other routes more suited to its needs.
