Morrisons is set to bring the shutters down on its butcher and fish counter at a Kent store, say staff.
Workers at the branch in Beach Street, Herne Bay, say they are among those caught up in cuts being made by the supermarket giant across the country.
Some 175 cafes, kitchens, stores and food counters have been earmarked for closure, with the coastal town’s meat and fish offering reportedly two of those in the firing line.
One staff member, who requested to remain anonymous, told KentOnline: “The staff on the meat and fish counters have been given meetings about redundancy and other opportunities within the company with nothing set in stone yet.
“It's important to remember that we are the only fishmongers for a fair radius.
“We have mortgages and families - the situation isn’t great.”
It is understood the last day of trading will be April 28.
News of the closure was shared on social media, where opinion was divided.
“There will be no reason to shop at Morrisons now,” said one customer.
“If they go, it will be a tragedy,” added another disappointed patron.
While another said: “Plenty of butchers in town - shop local and support small business instead.”
The supermarket giant announced proposals to close 52 cafes, all 18 market kitchens, 17 convenience stores, 13 florists, 35 meat counters, 36 fish counters and four pharmacies earlier this week.
In Kent, the Morrisons Daily convenience store in Higham Lane, Tonbridge, and the Morrisons Market Kitchen in Coldharbour Road, Gravesend, have been earmarked for closure.
Earlier this week the company said the changes put 365 colleagues at risk of redundancy.
Chief executive of Morrisons, Rami Baitiéh said these changes were “relatively small” in the context of the overall scale of the business, but added: “We do not take lightly the disruption and uncertainty they will cause to some of our colleague.”
He said: “The changes we are announcing are a necessary part of our plans to renew and reinvigorate Morrisons and enable us to focus our investment into the areas that customers really value and that can play a full part in our growth.”
Morrisons confirmed Herne Bay will be affected by Monday’s announcement.
