STAN TERNENT has left Gillingham after he failed to save the club from relegation from the Championship.

Ternent has been unable to agree a new deal to stay at Priestfield and leaves after five months at the helm.

He was appointed as successor to Andy Hessenthaler in December, after former England number two John Gorman had been in temporary charge.

The former Burnley boss seemed to be starting to turn the club around and they finally escaped the relegation zone for the first time in more than five months in March, but three points from their last three games was not enough to save them from the drop.

Assistant manager Ronnie Jepson remains at the club and is thought to be a candidate to succeed Ternent.

Chairman Paul Scally says he expects to name the new man by the end of the week.
