Kent set for snow and weather warnings in place as cold snap hits

Forecasters are warning Kent could see snow today, as flood and cold weather warnings remain in place.

The Met Office’s yellow alert for the entire county is now in force until midnight, with warnings up to 10cm of snow could fall in certain areas.

Experts say a weather system may push snow southwards, potentially causing disruption - though rain or sleet is more likely near the coast.

There is a small chance of power cuts and travel delays on the roads, rails and air.

Forecasters say Kent will be “staying cold with outbreaks of sleet and snow” throughout today.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “A cold, frosty and bright start. Cloud increasing from the south during the afternoon, with outbreaks of sleet and snow for southern counties, generally south of London, this gradually clearing through the evening. Maximum temperature 3 °C.

“Tonight, becoming dry with cloudier skies seeing temperatures slower to drop through the evening but remaining cold with a widespread frost and some ice likely into Thursday morning as skies clear. Minimum temperature -3 °C.”

The first snow of the year fell earlier this month, though much of it melted overnight as the weather turned mild and wet.

A spokesperson said: “If driving, leave more time to prepare and check your car before setting off – make sure you have essentials packed in your car in the event of any delays.

“People cope better when they have prepared in advance for the risk of power cuts or being cut off from services and amenities due to the snow.

“It’s easy to do – consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.”

It comes as Kent County Council warned yesterday an amber cold weather warning will stay in place until Sunday with low temperatures expected alongside further snow and ice warnings.

The local authority posted on X: “The amber alert has been extended to 12pm on 12/01/2025 across the south east, including Kent. Please keep looking out for vulnerable family, friends and neighbours.”

Properties in the county also continue to be significantly impacted by flooding, with some roads left impassable by the conditions.

One woman had to be rescued from her car on Monday evening after becoming stuck in Hartlake Road in Tudeley, Tonbridge.

Residents at Little Venice Country Park and Marina in Yalding and the surrounding areas have been advised to expect flooding, while parts of Ashford, Thanet and Tonbridge could also be impacted.
