A pensioner wants “smelly rubbish” which has been repeatedly dumped around her road to be cleared up for good.

Brenda Norris’ home is attracting flies due to the rubbish discarded around her property on Prospect Row, Chatham.

The issue has been ongoing for the last five years and in the last eight weeks fridges, bed mattresses, sacks of rubbish, tree cuttings, wooden furniture and cardboard boxes have all been dumped behind the Georgian terraces.

Yellow and black ‘investigation’ tape has been put around the rubbish in the last week which Mrs Norris has called “utterly ridiculous”.

The 82-year-old told KentOnline the rubbish is an “eye-sore” and she is fed up of cleaning it herself and wants to see cameras installed so the culprits can be caught.

She said: “It’s so selfish that people think it’s okay to dump their stuff around our homes. It is disrespectful.

“It brings me down watching it be cleared up and then return over the years, it makes me want to cry.

“I have cleaned it up in the past but I am getting too old to keep on doing this.

She added: “It's becoming a safety risk for me as I could fall over and hurt myself by clearing it up.

“There are now flies coming from the rubbish as foxes have ripped the bags open. Waste collection won’t take it now as it's ripped.”

Magistrates courts can impose fines up to £50,000 and/or imprisonment of up to 12 months for those found guilty of fly-tipping in Medway.

If the case is taken to crown court, the fines can be unlimited and a prison sentence of up to five years can be imposed.

The grandmother says she’s “upset” for residents in the area who are now looking to sell their properties.

She added: “All the rubbish devalues the area as people who want to buy have to walk past it all.

“I paid for my old bed mattress to be collected but people just dump theirs. Everybody used to take pride in where they live but not anymore.”

The latest rubbish load was due to be cleaned by the housing association responsible for the properties earlier this week.

Head of service delivery at mhs homes, Neil Sargent, said: “We were made aware of the fly-tipping on Wednesday 23 August after one of our caretakers reported the issue to us.

“We aim to remove fly-tipped items like this within five working days of receiving the report and we’re due to collect these items today (Wednesday 30 August).

“We appreciate that, as it was a bank holiday weekend, it could feel like a longer wait than usual and we thank customers in the area for their patience whilst waiting for the collection.”
