Roadworks have seen drivers facing traffic nightmares this morning.

A coned-off slip-road off the A289 towards the Medway Tunnel and Medway City Estate, at the Sans Pareil Roundabout, led to delays of up to an hour.

The queues stretched back to the Four Elms Roundabout and back along the Wainscott Bypass and Four Elms Hill.

The closure of short stretches of both Station Road and Banks Road in Strood also meant more drivers heading down Frindsbury Hill to the Sans Pareil Roundabout.

The combined impact of the works increased traffic at the Sans Pareil Roundabout.

Berwick Way, between Sans Pareil and the Medway City Estate, was also down to one lane.

Some drivers were reporting it added more than an hour to their usual journey times.

SGN works started yesterday in Station Road and Banks Road at 1.15pm (Monday, July 24) and are expected to conclude next Monday, July 31 just before midnight.

Station Road is closed between the traffic light junction which takes drivers onto the A228 and Banks Road.

Banks Road is shut between Commissioners Road and Station Road.

That route is used by thousands of drivers each day to access Medway City Estate via Commissioners Road.

A Medway Council spokesman said that the lane was closed due to a permit for works on the slip road but was then removed.

He said: “The permit for the roadworks in the Berwick Way area for BT was removed this morning to help alleviate traffic.

“The site has been cleared and all lanes are now open on Berwick Way.”
