More than a third of jobs at a refrigeration manufacturer are at risk.
Up to 45 roles could go at the Bond Group in New Road, Sheerness, which makes commercial units for supermarkets.
It employs 120 workers and supplies customers including Asda, M&S, Iceland, Morrisons, Tesco and the Co-op.
The firm, which also has a base in Falkirk, Scotland, employs 200 people altogether.
But a need to “safeguard” the business has led to the decision to start a consultation.
It is considering voluntary redundancies as part of the process.
A spokeswoman told KentOnline: “I can confirm that following a period of relative stability the company needs to restructure and realign more closely with future customer needs.
“We will be considering voluntary redundancies as part of the consultation process in addition to other measures to safeguard the business and to save as many jobs as possible.”
Labour MP for Sittingbourne and Sheppey, Kevin McKenna, says the news is “very worrying”.
He added: “Sheerness is a great place to do business. The skills and strengths of local people as well as the presence of Sheerness Docks, and the many local logistics centres nearby is why Sheppey is home to so many local manufacturing businesses.
“The news about The Bond Group potentially making many of its staff redundant, leaving local skilled workers searching for a new job, is very worrying.
“Financial mismanagement and a lack of stability for businesses under the Tories mean so many businesses are having to make tough choices.
“So, it is a shame to see a company so important in Sheerness having to confront these challenges.
“I am going to speak to The Bond Group to better understand their challenges and see what help I, as MP, and the Labour government can offer.”
KentOnline has approached The Bond Group for further information.
