It is understood the van careered off the road, near the junction with Newman Drive, and struck the front of a family’s home.

Two of a mum’s four children were in the house when it happened.

The impact took out a window and much of the brickwork which fell into the living room.

Neighbours reported hearing a big thud before seeing the driver climbing out of the van.

The emergency services were called, including fire crews who helped pull the van away from the house.

Police shut the road but a force spokesman said “no injuries were reported”.

A neighbour who did not want to be named said: “It was a shock to everyone how it happened so sudden.

“The main road down the side of Adisham Green, there are always cars going down the road way too quick.

“They need to put speed bumps in or speed cameras up to stop this from happening again.”

A DPD spokesman said: “The depot Operations Manager attended the scene immediately to help out.

“He spoke to everybody and was able to view CCTV footage of the incident from a neighbour.

“As a result, we can confirm that the DPD driver was forced to swerve to avoid a head-on collision with a car, which unfortunately resulted in him hitting the house.

“Nobody was injured in the house and the driver was fine. There were two teenage boys inside the house at the time, the rest arrived by car later. The van has very minimal damage to it.

“We are very relieved that no one was hurt in this incident and will obviously work with the insurers to ensure that everything is resolved as soon as possible for the family. "
