A bar which showcased the talents of magicians from across the country has closed after failing to conjure up enough customers post-pandemic.

Houdini’s Magic Bar opened its doors in Broadstairs High Street back in 2016 – proving to be an instant hit with punters.

With a five-star Tripadvisor rating, the venture is the brainchild of husband-and-wife Sam and Claudette Watson and the pair later took on a site in Canterbury high street in 2018.

However, the couple have confirmed their first-ever site would be closing, saying: “It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our Broadstairs venue, our first magic home.

“We've seen people come to us for first dates and proposals then return to us after they've been married.

“We've introduced people to magic, gained so many friends, and extended our family.

“Since Covid, it just hasn't been the same, and although we've given it our best, it's time to move on and pour our love into Canterbury.

“We love all of you, you've really made Broadstairs magic for us the past seven years.

“We hope that we will see your beautiful faces in Canterbury where you can join us for everything Houdini's, there are exciting things coming.

“Until we find a new location for our next venue, we will see you in the city.”

Its Canterbury branch opened in 2018 and has become an icon of the city in its short time in St Peter’s Street.

On Tripadvisor, the bar has a five-star rating with 283 out of 307 reviewers branding the joint as “excellent”.

The Broadstairs site similarly enjoyed the praise of many, with 221 out of 244 reviews offering a top-tier rating.

Customers can continue to enjoy a drink in Canterbury while being dazzled by displays by magicians from across the country. Those paying a visit have included the illusionist Derren Brown.
