A brave teenager has revealed how her life was turned upside down after she was secretly filmed in the shower by her paedophile brother-in-law.
Hollie Boyce was just 14 when Andrew Veck set up his phone to record her in the bathroom of her sister’s house in Ramsgate.
More than two years on, she still carries the scars of an ordeal that has pulled her family apart, with her sister since having a baby with 33-year-old Veck, who was spared jail last month.
Now aged 16, Hollie has courageously waived her right to anonymity to tell of the impact of the traumatic experience, which previously left her feeling “suicidal and ashamed”.
“At the time, I was more in a state of shock - I wasn’t crying but I was shaking a lot,” she said, recalling how she felt after learning what her brother-in-law had done.
“It took a few days to realise what had happened but even now I’m still traumatised.
“I’ve got PTSD. I almost developed an eating disorder from it all. I was depressed - I wanted to kill myself.
“It’s been horrendous. I blocked all my friends because I didn't feel I could trust anyone. I didn't speak to people for months, I didn't go outside for months because I physically couldn’t.”
Recalling the events of June 7, 2022, Hollie told how she was staying at her sister’s “to make up for lost time after Covid”.
She told Veck she was going to take a shower and recalls him asking if he could use the bathroom first.
She says it was only as she was washing her hair she noticed his phone had been left behind, with the camera pointing towards her.
Hollie took a photo of the mobile as it was recording, before alerting her sister, who she no longer sees.
In the commotion that followed, the footage was initially deleted but was later recovered after Hollie’s mum, Julie Noone, called the police.
Further investigations found Veck to be in possession of indecent images of children, including some classified as Category A—the most serious level.
He was arrested and charged with voyeurism, making an indecent image of a child and three counts of possessing indecent images.
He admitted the offences and narrowly avoided prison when he was sentenced at Canterbury Crown Court last month.
He was jailed for 16 months but the term was suspended for two years. He was also ordered to carry out 240 hours of unpaid work, pay Hollie £1,200 compensation and complete 20 days of a rehabilitation activity requirement.
The court also imposed a restraining order, banning him from making any contact with Hollie, and made him subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order - both for a period of 10 years.
Hollie said: “There was no jail time, it’s just a bit of compensation money, but that’s not going to change what happened to me and everything I lost.
“Obviously, I'm glad I'm here to be able to spread awareness. Maybe it gives people an opportunity to come forward if they're scared or they don't feel that they can or they're worried what people will think.
“I originally wasn't going to say anything to anyone because, it sounds silly, but I was embarrassed because it happened to me and I was scared people would make fun of me for it.
“I just thought they'd judge me and be like ‘You're an idiot, how could you let that happen?’.”
Her mum added: “There's nothing more really we can do apart from spread awareness to other people - it’s just so sickening.”
