Police stand down after ‘no suspect found’ in Margate play park rape probe

Police have stood down after an eight-day investigation into the alleged rape of a man near a park.

The force launched a probe following reports the incident happened in Margate, near the Viking Ship Play Park in Ethelbert Crescent, between 8.30pm and 9.30pm on January 21.

Today, police say there is no wider risk to the community after concluding the investigation.

Detective inspector Richard Palmer said: “Kent Police take reports of sexual offences seriously and will work to identify all lines of enquiry to help us establish the circumstances.

“We want to thank everyone who has assisted in our investigation into this report.

“Our priority is to support and protect the public, and I hope people are reassured that there is no wider risk to the community and that Margate continues to be a safe location to live and work in.”

On January 21, the force announced it was searching for witnesses after a man was allegedly approached by another when the assault took place.

The suspect was then described as slim, under 5ft 5ins and aged in his early 20s wearing a black hooded coat, black tracksuit, and black trainers.

Police said today a “thorough investigation” has been carried out, including deploying forensics, speaking to witnesses and reviewing CCTV.

But officers have now “exhausted all current lines of enquiry” and are no longer seeking any suspect.
