A car believed to have been used in a series of drive-by ”eggings” has been seized by police after it crashed into a house.

Yobs terrorised Staplehurst residents during a 10-day spree of egg throwing, leaving one victim with a bruised face after hitting him at close range.

Staplehurst Parish Council chairman Paddy Riordan was among the first to be targeted.

His car was egged as he drove through the village on June 22.

He said: “The first I knew of egging attacks was when I had eggs thrown against the side of my car as they drove past.

“The attacks were going on regularly for around 10 days.

“I was informed by residents that the attacks were causing damage to their vehicles.”

On June 28, an 18-year-old man was left with an eye injury after being pelted with an egg thrown by people in a passing car in Station Road.

His girlfriend, who did not want to be named, said: “It is absolutely disgusting.

“If you’re going 30-40mph down the road and throw something into someone’s eyes who is right next to the curb you don’t think that can be very dangerous?

“They are sad low lives.”

On July 1, police were called about eggs being thrown from two moving cars as they had driven through the village over the preceding week.

A police spokesman continued: “On the following day, one of the cars suspected to have been involved in these incidents collided with a property in Iden Crescent, Staplehurst.

“A search of the area did not locate them and the vehicle was seized for forensic examination.

“An investigation is under way into the circumstances including the review of CCTV in the area.”

The crash happened in the early hours of July 2, with police and the fire service being called at 2.24am.

Inspector Steve Kent, of the Maidstone Community Safety Unit, said: “Keeping people safe is a year-round priority for Kent Police but the longer days and warmer weather of the summer months can often lead to increases in crime and anti-social behaviour.

“We currently have high-visibility patrols in the Staplehurst area and I would urge anybody who suffers incidents of anti-social behaviour to contact us so that we can deploy our resources effectively.”
